Dr. Avi Weisfogel Aids in Advancements of Sleep Apnea Research and Solutions
The Founder of Dental Sleep Masters works to diagnose and treat sleep apnea disorder
It treating patients dealing with sleep disorders, Dr. Avi Weisfogel cofounded the Dental Sleep Masters based out of South Orange, New Jersey. He began the company in April 2014 along with two other dentists, with the goal of assisting patients who have obstructive sleep apnea. Dentists affiliated with the company provide patients with oral applicators as an effective alternative to traditional sleep apnea treatments. At Dental Sleep Masters, Avi Weisfogel, DDS, is in charge of the company’s overall business growth.
Before opening Dental Sleep Masters, Dr. Avi Weisfogel was owner and chief lecturer for Owner Unlimited Sleep Patient in Old Bridge, New Jersey. While there, he taught dentists how to increase the number of sleep patients they saw by teaching and running sleep programs. He also held the roles of managing partner and co-owner of Healthy Heart Sleep, also in Old Bridge. In this position, he worked with hundreds of physicians across the country to run sleep labs at their own locations.
When not in the office, Dr. Avi Weisfogel stays active and loves to ski. An avid sports fan, he follows the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Cleveland Browns as well as holds season tickets for the New York Rangers. He enjoys spending his downtime with his family and puppy. Dr. Avi Weisfogel of Dental Sleep Masters leads the cause to help diagnose and treat those with sleep apnea. Roughly 90% of people that suffer from this disorder remain undiagnosed. Knowing that this is a timely issue which requires increased awareness, Dr. Weisfogel and his team at Dental Sleep Masters aim to shine a light on this serious condition.
What Dental Sleep Masters has created is a new model for primary and secondary care physicians that is also inclusive of certified sleep physicians and the sleep labs they operate. This model represents the larger picture and results in better care for patients while also increasing opportunities within the medical community.
Physicians and sleep physicians have been joined by dentists who can offer clinical support for those suffering from sleep apnea. The treatment of this disorder will only increase in coming years as more breakthroughs emerge. Dentists may find a large portion of their practice can be devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea.
Clinical care will continue to be buoyed by new devices being developed. Many patients do not respond positively to the previously developed mechanical treatments for sleep apnea. THN Sleep Therapy is a new device developed by ImThera Medical and was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for experimentation in clinical trials.
More alternative treatments are becoming smaller in size and more user friendly. This will encourage more patients to seek a cure for their sleep apnea. These small implantable devices do not require the use of noisy and disruptive machinery or uncomfortable masks.
Because those with sleep apnea may wake up to 30 times a night, it became clear that a treatment was needed that could stimulate the airway muscles to stay open. Upper airway stimulation was approved by the FDA in 2014 and has been well tolerated among patients.
The integration of medical and dental professionals is essential to create a model of care that can effectively treat patients. Dr. Avi Weisfogel's model is integral in finding solutions that will benefit the general population. By treating this previously undiagnosed portion of people, professionals will find their business increase while also doing an important public service.

Where did the idea for Dental Sleep Masters come from?

The first 15 years of my career were spent as a dentist and I had always been fascinated with the world of sleep medicine. I combined these passions with my background in marketing and realized this niche didn’t exist anywhere else.

What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?

I get to the office around 6 a.m. and spend that first hour praying, I spend the next hour speaking with my life coach and getting mentally prepared for the day. 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. are spent on everything from taking calls, business meetings, writing blog posts, speaking with members, etc. To keep myself productive I have to schedule everything, and I mean everything.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I take notes on my phone or on paper and write everything down. If I write it down, I can analyze and visualize it and this helps me bring them to life.

What’s one trend that really excites you?

The ability to interact with different people from across the world and through different industries each one of us with our own strengths. This allows us to come together and make things that simply aren’t possible to make on your own.

What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?

Repetition and being able to take constructive criticism, it strengthens my projects and helps me improve.

What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?

Honestly, it was being a dentist. I wasn’t passionate about it. It was 15 years of my life, but if I wouldn’t have started out in dentistry I wouldn’t be where I am today.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

I would be more humble in my approach.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Have similar conversations with different people. Every conversation I have leads to more productive conversations moving forward. I’m constantly learning and evolving in my approach to my clients.

What is one strategy that helped you grow your business?

Regional Marketing. People are looking for ease and I try to make it as simple as possible for a client to find us.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

My biggest failure was going all in on the sleep lab business and being too late. It gave me really good insight into the business and what people actually need and I was able to apply that knowledge to my current success.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

One business idea I’d be happy to give away to someone would be to come up with a dental mirror that has a little windshield wiper on it so dentists would not have to stop in the middle of a procedure to wipe their mirror.
Another one would be an app where I can speak all my ideas and notes and the program would convert them into an organized fashion that I can use and post to my website easily.

What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?

I recently went out to dinner with my wife, you can’t put a price on time with your family.

What software and web services do you use? What do you love about them?

I’m a big fan of LinkedIn given my line of work. I’m also a fan of the hosting company Regfox, which allows us to set up events and conference very easily.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

The Power of Now. It’s must reading for understanding why we do certain things in life and how we can improve as human beings.

What people have influenced your thinking and might be of interest to others?

Steve Jobs. His ingenuity and attention to detail is something that I’ve always been impressed with.
